huka-falls-resort-1641Increasingly I’m being hired by companies in the capacity of presenter for a variety of events. In recent months I’ve been the Master of Ceremonies (MC) at Silverstream Retreat for the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards night, a movie preview for Toshiba where they launched their range of new tablets and performance laptops a couple of Wellington Audio Association meetings.

I’m also thrilled to have been asked back to be the MC/Compère for the Bridal Fashion Parades at the Grand Wedding Show at Sky City in Auckland. At this latest wedding show I also assisted with two seminars (‘How Much Should a DJ Cost?’ and ‘Improve-a-Groom’) as well as running a seminar of my own, (Wedding Speeches Made Easy) which will be the subject of a future post on this blog.

Coming up in a few weeks time is another corporate event, but this one is a bit special. A large nationwide New Zealand retailer has booked me to be the Master of Ceremonies for their gala prize-giving event in Fiji. I’m being flown over to Fiji, accommodated at the Sheraton Denarau for a few nights and flown home. The awards night is going to be a full on night and I can’t wait.

If you’d asked me ten years ago if there was a market for a mobile DJ to also be an MC, either at a wedding or at a corporate event, I would have said no, absolutely not. I didn’t realise that the skills that I have developed as a mobile DJ are exactly suited for the role of MC.

Preparation, public speaking, microphone handling, humour, confidence, presentation, an understanding of event etiquette and the ability to control a group are all key components to being a great MC and these are all skills that a professional, experienced mobile DJ requires in addition to their music playing and programming expertise.

Increasingly these jobs are coming in as referrals from people who have seen me at a wedding. I’m often told by my clients that with my voice and presenting skills that I should be on TV or radio. Perhaps that’s still in my future, but for now these corporate events are a most welcome addition to my portfolio of events and celebrations.
