Compared with many DJs, my equipment when set up, is incredibly compact and visually discreet. The aim is to not detract from the (usually) beautifully decorated venue with big speakers, lighting frames, cables and other equipment.
When the situation requires it however, I use substantially more equipment than most although this isn’t the case for most of the work I do. Here’s an example of a corporate event I entertained for 1100 people. My standard equipment (which is more than adequate for 99% of my work) wouldn’t have cut the mustard here, so it made sense to pay a sound company and a lighting company to supply, install and operate the additional gear.
This client didn’t have to learn from me about Martin Mac lights, JBL SRX speakers, DMX and all of the other things as I was able to handle that for them. Even in our meetings we didn’t discuss specifics, other than to work out the ‘feel’ and ‘look’ that they wanted. The lighting company painted the room with light and during the dancing, helped to keep the energy level high with lots of nightclub-style moving effects lighting.
